The enumeration of the seven liberal arts already appears in a work by writer Martianus Capella, specifically in the “Satyricon or De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii et de septem Artibus liberalibus libri novem”.

Trivium, from Latin “three ways or paths”, grouped the disciplines related to eloquence: grammar (lingua – “language”), dialectics (ratio – “reason”) and rhetoric (tropus – “figures”).

Quadrivium, from Latin “four ways”; grouped together the subjects related to mathematics. Thus, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music were studied.

TRIVIUM + QUADRIVIUM = YVIUM
